This is just a taste of my final project. Hopefully, these pictures will be printed on dictionary paper and near the words that the subjects thought described themselves. I want to see how words and meanings can relate to someone. Also, can a person embody a whole meaning by just their looks. I also want to address the idea, "If I looked up___ in the dictionary, I would find your picture next to it". The purpose of the pictures literally give an illustration to the dictionary meaning that encompass the person's personality.
I do not wish to have to matte this prints, however, what do you guys think?
I have to finish getting people's pictures and editing. I have schedule some time to print and then hopefully be ready to see my work on the art gallery's wall! :) Soooo excited!

I really think your project idea is cool. I like how you stick with the black and white aspect of the dictionary pages and the outline of the person. I like how you only give a taste of what the person looks like to allow the view to think past the picture and try to gain their own idea and opinions of the person. Letting the viewer form their own opinion whether their picture does really illustrate the word they chose to describe themselves or to ask the question why did they characterize themselves as such. Maybe even the question what word on that page is supposed to describe them as well if you don’t point out that word to begin with. I really think the image of the person on top of the dictionary page will really emphasize your idea of “If I looked up___ in the dictionary, I would find your picture next to it.” I don’t think you should mat these prints. I think that if you mat the pictures you might take away from what you are trying to show. But then again it could also possibly point to the specific word they are characterized by? I’m not sure. However, if I was doing your project I wouldn’t mat it and let it be raw hanging up. Maybe even use just a push pin to put it up on the wall to help illustrate how characterizing oneself can be a personal issue and bring out the rawness of the idea and subject. If that makes any sense :p hahah hopefully you get what I’m trying to say. :p LOL
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to see these posed pictures transformed into a two-toned image…the images because more simple and graphic. I believe they will transfer nicely on top of the dictionary pages and will stand out enough to be readable, but blend in enough to add complexity to the page. You mentioned in class that you might hilight or underline the word on each page, which I think is a great idea. Technically, things seem to be coming along…the 2nd image (the only one that is a full silhouette) could still use a bit of cleaning up around the edges…I can help you with this tomorrow if you need it. You certainly do not have to mat these images for final presentation, but It may be something you want to do eventually to protect the work…The idea of hanging or somehow displaying the pages "as is" would be interesting, as we would be able to see the edges of the paper and know that we are seeing actually pages from the dictionary, not just photographs or copies.
ReplyDeleteWhatever you decide, I think this will turn out great!
This project sounds awesome! I love the idea of printing on dictionary paper. They're great photos, but with meaning. in other words they're not just another pretty photograph. I like the idea of very harsh black and white, it will fit well with the dictionary paper. This project not only has a purpose, but also sounds like a lot of fun. i personally wouldnt mat, but like Kate said you do want to protect a piece like this so maybe later on it would be something to think about. good work! can;t wait to see how it all comes out and is displayed.
